263. A Speaking Engagement for High School Teens

I had a great time Saturday August 12th (my Dad's birthday btw), with a group of awesome guys. I was invited to speak by fellow Houston Breathe University member Matthew Flores, a leader in the real estate industry and a master negotiation expert.

The teens are accomplished wrestlers who have their sights set on attending an event in Florida. The engagement was all about helping to raise money to get them there.

Although I was there as an educator, I talked to them about something I had never really shared publicly before. It was about my appearance on a reality TV show and how that almost destroyed my life.

My message to them was all about learning how to handle rejection and negative feedback.

We're living in the age of social media, of likes and negative comments. People always have an opinion and sometimes those opinions aren't uplifting. I should know. I had a barrage of negative feedback my freshman year of college.

Here's the thing. Everyone has something going on with them. EVERYONE. And a lot of times hurt people will go out of their way to hurt other people. But, when you stand firm in who who are and not become defined by other people's perception of you, you can live your life unrestrained, free from worry about what other people will say.

Because people WILL say things.

But look at me now -- victorious. I'm able to stand in front of young people and share a testimony that can help them to keep moving forward in spite of what people think.

At any rate, I'm thankful for the experience. The teens are awesome, and the coach, Coach Warner, is an amazing person. His interaction with those young people is admirable.

It is my sincerest hope that they reach their destination.
