I start my morning the same way everyday. I thank God for his goodness, I pray for people in my life as well as for myself, eat a healthy, non-sugary breakfast, and write -- all before work. Starting this way has been one of the main components of my success throughout the day. I'm not saying that every day feels great or goes perfect. I'm saying that this routine jump-starts my morning and lays a foundation for success.
Just this morning, I left at my usual time. I don't like to be late to ANYTHING, so I always like to at least be 30 minutes to 1 hour early. Well, it just so happens that as I was driving, I ran smack dab into some heavy traffic. That was pretty unusual for the normal route I take. What was supposed to be a 25-30 minute commute turned into a 1 hour drive.
Obviously, this could've really put a damper in my mood. But, here's the amazing thing. I made a decision not to let this upset me. I muscled my way through Houston traffic, exited, and went an alternate route. I kept repeating, "I will not let this ruin my day."
My alternate route opened up, and I was progressing down the beltway. Although I reached school a little later than I would have liked, I was still 15 minutes early. Not only that, but as soon as I walked into the building, I heard the announcement: "Teachers, a continental breakfast is available for you in the lounge."
I smiled. I did not let the highway shutdown ruin my day.
Every day we're faced with daily stressors. Whether it comes from traffic, our jobs, challenging adults and kids, there are external factors that threatens to run us into the ground. However, if we start the day with a strong foundation, a routine that promotes positivity and success, we can better manage those day-to-day challenges.
