78. Thankful Thursday #11: A Time to Give

I truly believe that our purpose on earth is to use our gifts and talents to serve God and his people. I believe that our insanely talented selves can use the blessings that we possess to bless others. I've learned that the key to fulfillment is not necessarily money, but the joy of making someone's life a little better. It's the reason I teach, the reason I write, the reason I keep pursuing every dream.

This leads me to my next question:

In what ways are you giving? How can you give more?

I understand that our day to day lives can get hectic. We can be so focused on our own to do lists that taking time for someone else may seem to be a little impossible. But here's the thing:

It's never impossible to set time to the side to give our time, talent, or attention to something other than ourselves.

When I was younger, my mother would tell my sisters and I, "It's better to give than receive. When you give you get back." Although I've found this to be true, I still often got it wrong. There were times when I gave something, only to seek something in return. Or, I wouldn't give at all. I didn't understand what it was like to be a cheerful giver. Until now.

As a maturing adult who has put away childish things, I finally get what my mother was trying to say:

The more you pour into people, the more God will continue to pour into you.

He will trust you with more because he knows you are a responsible steward. You don't hang on to blessings and only give on a one time basis; you are generous, and the charitable resources you distribute are plentiful.

I'm currently seeking an opportunity to help others in a more meaningful way outside of school. I already tutor at work, attend some of my students' games, and try to be available for work when I can.

But, I want to extend beyond the workplace. I want to step out into the community and be a blessing. I know it doesn't take a lot to find a person, group, or organization to support, but I want to be deliberate, intentional, and dedicated. I want to be passionate, connect with others on a deeper level, and be consistent in whatever place or cause I choose.

Until next time, I challenge you all to find a way to give, perform a random act of kindness, or just be inspired to live your higher self. It gives your life way more meaning and will probably change your life forever.
