The moment I read Angie Thomas's excerpt from her debut novel The Hate U Give (T.H.U.G), I froze. My eyebrows raised a notch. My first reaction, "My goodness, this tease actually MAKES people want to read." I was blown away, excited to dive into her material.
Then something weird happened. As the book-reading teacher part of me felt excited, the obscure writer in me felt a bit overwhelmed and, for only a moment, down. Here I am, starting from the shadowy, hidden places of the web and there she is with a book deal and movie adaptation in development. For some people, seeing this would make them want to throw in the towel, and say, "What's the use?"
For others, success stories like Angie Thomas's can motivate and inspire others to keep moving forward. I choose this option.
